Handbill for the Ancona exhibition, which was called “Projection Experiments” as late as October 1896. Since the organizer was the Edison agent for Italy, the show was likely an Edison Vitascope. [Aldo Bernardini, Gli ambulanti, Gemona 2001: La Cineteca del Friuli, p. 156.]

October 11:

Cinématographe Joly-Normandin opens as Cinématographe Eugène Pirou at the Grand Café de la Paix, 12 Boulevard de Capucines, Paris, not far from the Lumière exhibition on the same street. Pirou was an active Paris photographer who became a prominent early film exhibitor and filmmaker with the Joly apparatus, distinguished by its use of five perforations per frame instead of the four used by Edison. In November Pirou opened a second Paris exhibition at the Maison Doisteau, 86 rue de Clichy, under the name Cinématographe Eugène Pirou-Normandin. He maintained his exhibition into 1897, no doubt encouraged by the production of some risqué films like Le coucher de la mariée (The Bride goes to Bed) and Bain de la parisienne (The Bath of a Parisienne) that were later reproduced by many others.
